Friday Group

A place for young people with learning disabilities to develop creative and professional skills

What is it?

Four people hold realistic roman swords and shields in a line. The person on the left looks frightened, next to him a young black man is giving a battle cry, next to him a young white woman looks determined, and on the right a young black man is grinning to someone off camera
Friday Group is a flexible learning environment for young people with identified learning needs.

It is focussed on developing creative professional skills through real-world creative projects.

The Friday Group group comes together every Friday from 10am till 2pm. The sessions are a mix of non-verbal physical theatre, delivering workshops and creative projects. We do this through group exercises as well as supporting individuals in their personal development.

What do we do?

We make a bonkers range of drama & film projects in partnership with theatre and heritage companies, like the Birmingham REP, Birmingham Hippodrome, Black Country Living Museum and the Canal & River Trust. Here’s just a few examples of what we get up to

A young black actor, wearing an old fashioned bus conductor costume, stares angrily at someone from the doors of an old bus

“Open Theatre inspires me to create my own stories and make my own films. They make me feel welcome, loved and happy, and I can’t wait to be working with people in a creative space again.”
