What We've Made

Open Theatre has been developing work with Young People with Learning Disabilities (YPWLD) through non-verbal physical theatre for over 30 years and we're just getting started.

What We’ve Made

Emerging Artists

Open Theatre supports emerging artists with learning disabilities to develop their own creative projects. These projects are imagined, designed and created by the emerging artists, with just a little help from us.

Ronnie & Johnny

by Rob Bate

Ronnie and Johnny invite you into their world, if you think you can handle it? It’s filled with the mundane realities and outrageously hilarious moments of life as a disabled young adult. In all its glory.

Behind Closed Doors

by Jake Jarvis

“Behind” It’s Upfront. “Closed” It’s Open. “Doors” It’s Imaginative.

Put it all together it’s an Upfront Open Imaginative Experience.

Tom N Rob

‘The Amazing Spying Iron Spider Kickbutt Rangers!’

Tom N Rob are a physical theatre/dance duo whose work challenges perceptions, breaks down barriers, and encourages acceptance of difference.

Juke & Lake

– by Jake Jarvis and Luke Greenwood

Juke & Lake are twins dressed the same from birth – still struggling to work out who they are – are they the same person?

Party Animal

by Madeline Levy

Meet Mark, a determined and misunderstood young lad on the Autistic Spectrum who, believing that a party animal is a real creature, goes hunting for one. This would lead him off onto a wild journey indeed… A funny, uplifting and poignant story, and a moment of hope in these murky times.

Tom N Rob: Break Free

Tom N Rob: Break Free is a captivating duet of comedic dance theatre, created by talent and friendship in its purest form.

Blank Canvas

by Madeline Levy

Blank Canvas was a piece of forum theatre. It invites you all to share a cuppa in this unique and pivotal journey into the lives of 7 young people living with diagnosed conditions in the 21st century. Touchingly human and ferociously insightful, this forum theatre piece will ask you to raise your own Alternative Voice in exploring themes of Identity, Belonging and Justice.

Our Past Projects

When Open Theatre became an NPO organisation in 2018, it marked a whole new phase of growth for us. We went from working with about 300 young people per year to over 2300 in 2022. We made all sorts of exciting new projects – like the nationally touring Twisted Tale of Hansel & Gretel, as well as taking part in the incredible Coventry City of Culture and Commonwealth Games programmes in the region.

Here’s a look back at everything we’ve achieved over the past 4 years, and don’t forget to check out the Company Archives for a look at the company’s whole 30+ year history.

Water, Water, Everywhere!

A crossing - a view of the exhbition from the foot of the bridge, focussing on a large yellow and blue silk sheet
All aboard - a series of wooden boxes, white linens and blue "pool noodle" floats are arranged to evoke a sailing boat. Hanging from the highest point is a flag of a skull and crossbones, this is clearly a pirate vessel
