Hello everyone and welcome to this month’s blog!

This month will be slightly different as the blog is promoting ‘The Great British Spring Clean.’ Open Theatre has pledged to support ‘The Great British Spring Clean’ and will be out litter picking from 28th of May – 13th of June 2021. We believe in a cleaner, greener environment and litter picking is a great way to achieve that. Whether you go out on your own or in a group we hope you will join us in our cause. You can also watch our promotional video for the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ and a link will be provided at the end of this blog.

The History of the Great British Spring Clean

In 1954 The National Federation of Women’s Institutes passed a resolution to “Keep Britain Tidy.” In the nineteen sixties they registered as a charity and their tidy man logo started to appear on bins across the country. By the nineteen seventies they were influencing behaviour across Britain and having positive impacts upon people’s attitude and behaviour where littering was involved. The dangerous litter act was also created in the seventies. Having a policy made it harder for people to ignore the rules on littering and protected people’s health and safety. The charity also cleaned for the Queen to mark her Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Sixty-six years later the Great British Spring clean launches for its second year as an impactful environmental campaign.

Positive impacts on mental health and wellbeing

Picking litter can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. Whether it’s being outside connecting with nature, getting a bit of light exercise, being with friends or getting involved in a cause that is positive for the environment that does it for you or a combination of the above, all of these things have known positive impacts on mental health and wellbeing. As it was Mental Health awareness month last month all of these things are at the forefront of our minds. Still, we don’t just want to be thinking about our mental health and wellbeing for a month, we want to think about how we can support each other to stay mentally well and healthy all of the time and making a clean environment and positive thinking about our impact upon the planet can be a very rewarding thing to do.

How to get involved

If you are as excited about this as we are then there are many ways you can get involved. Firstly, you can go out litter picking either on your own or in a group. If you are not currently shielding and have no symptoms of Covid 19 then you can pack your black bin bags, Bags for recycling, litter picker, disposable gloves, hand sanitiser, a camera to take a picture of yourself litter picking for our website. You may also wish to wear a high visibility jacket and take a first aid kit just in case! Better safe than sorry! Secondly, if this seems like a big ask then you can just pick up litter as you see it on the street or be mindful to put your own litter in the bin each time and you will be being massively helpful to us and the environment.

Why get involved?

You will be helping to save our wildlife and our oceans. There are more than 2.25 million pieces of litter dropped on the ground each day in Britain and some of this makes its way into the sea. This harms the animals who live there. You will also be doing your bit to help us fight climate change as humans are having a negative and damaging impact on the planet that we call home.

For more information on how to get involved please email grace@opentheatre.co.uk and watch our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIO3x6xTR8g

From all of us at Open Theatre stay safe and happy litter picking!
