Work Placements

This page lists all of our current work placement & volunteering opportunities. Click here to see our job vacancies

About the Post:

Work Placements are a great way for students to gain hands-on experience working in their potential careers.

We offer flexible work placements for drama, community arts, creative industries & other Higher-Education & Further Education students. You will support our theatre practitioners delivering non-verbal physical theatre with young people with learning disabilities, in special schools & out-of-school settings.

You will receive a full induction, training & support during your placement.

How to Apply:

You can apply for a Work Placement with Open Theatre at any time.

We particularly welcome applicants from backgrounds, experiences & identities currently under-represented in our organisation, including Black, Asian and global majority people, and those identifying as men. As a learning disabled theatre company, we always strongly encourage applications from people identifying as disabled, neurodivergent, autistic, and people with learning disabilities.

If we think we’re a good fit for each other, you’ll be invited to a short interview.

Applicants will need an Enhanced DBS check before starting a placement with us. This will need to be arranged by your college or university – talk to your placements officer for help.

If you need access to our application forms in any other alternative formats, contact recruitment@opentheatre.co.uk

Our Commitment to Safeguarding

Open Theatre believes that children and young people should never experience abuse of any kind. Open Theatre is committed to work in a way that promotes the welfare of all children and young people, to keep them safe and to protect them from harm. We recognise our duty to ensure that appropriate action is taken where a child or young person is experiencing harm or is at risk of harm. All employees, including freelancers, volunteers & work placements, are expected to share our commitment to safeguarding children and young people. We offer training and inductions for our volunteers and work placement students to enable them to confidently share in the responsibilties and commitments of creating a safe and open environment as much as our staff members.

Guaranteed Interview Scheme for Black* and/or Disabled applicants

Open Theatre recognises the long-term systemic barriers which have prevented black artists & cultural workers from thriving in the industry.

As part of our commitment under the More than a Moment initiative to combat these barriers, we are operating a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for any applicants from black* backgrounds who meet the Essential Criteria in the Personal Specification. You can read more about our other commitments & progress in uplifting black creatives in our organisation in our most recent Action Plan

We are equally committed to providing opportunities for disabled artists, including those identifying as neurodivergent, autistic or as having autism, as having learning disabilities or differences, or mental health conditions. The Guaranteed Interview Scheme will apply to anyone applying who meets the Essential Criteria in the Personal Specification, and identifies as disabled.

* We have adopted the Black Ticket Project‘s definition of ‘Black’: as of Black African, Caribbean, Afro-Latinx and African-American heritage, including those of mixed-Black heritage who identify as such (More Than A Moment).
